Down to 16 Days Before Thanksgiving

Sixteen days, sixteen days, SIXteen days before the in laws come to dinner!  What can I possibly do?  Let’s see I purchased a table that extends to seat 10 from www.potterybarn.com.   I have chairs.  Hmmm. . . I’d better work on the menu, the linens and the accessories.  My recommendations are: 1.  Ina Garten’s Book   2.  One of my favorite resources for recipes is www.allrecipes.com.  When my daughter, Nicole, was going to cooking classes the college recommended that site. 3.  Linens, linens, linens Lulu DK for Matouk 4.  Accessories www.cb2.com hitched...

Change It Out or Spiff It Up!

Dear Readers, In the spirit of my posts on getting ready for Thanksgiving today’s post is about your dining room chandelier.  I say, “Change it out, or spiff it up!” Here are my favorite chandeliers: by Murray Feiss The nice thing about lighting is that if it is in stock you can get it delivered pretty quickly.  I would plan on just over a week.  This gives you plenty of time before Turkey Day. OR you can choose to spiff it up!   Cheers,...

How about creating a gallery wall?  Start going through your pictures and memorabilia until you have a collection.  Head to the local Frame Shop and get busy.  After you have collected your artwork it is just a matter of an afternoon to put it all together.  You will be ready to impress in no time at all. Cheers,...

26 Days Till Thanksgiving

courtesy www.ivillage.com   I’ve been fretting over getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and decided I should solve it ONE bite at a time.  I will never forget when I was overwhelmed in college Jim told me that you eat an elephant one bite at a time.  With that in mind I’ve decided to blog about what kinds of things can be done in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas in terms of interior design. There are a few deadlines we have to discuss first.  If you plan on ordering designer furniture plan on 4 – 8 weeks for delivery.  So if you were...

How to Pick Your Paint Color

When it comes to picking out paint colors for your room the process can be very confusing.  Look for inspiration in artwork, a rug or textiles.  If you do this first you can narrow down your choices.  Another clue for choosing a paint color palette is to look at your wardrobe.  Do you wear primarily neutral colors?  vibrant colors? or does one color stand out? With this project I chose to draw my color palette from the Wesco drapery fabric.  This suzani inspired print is very vibrant and full of life.  To tone it down I chose Sherwin Williams Irish Cream for the walls, Sherwin...

Small Town Designer in Sensible Shoes

For those of you that know me you know I call myself, the Small Town Designer in Sensible Shoes.  This week I spent some time in Oakland and visited Temescal Alley, an up and coming hip spot in the city filled with quaint shops.  I was drawn to the rich history of the architecture mixed with the drive of true artisans selling their wares.  To read more of the history of the area also known as Alley 49 go to this link: http://www.sfgate.com/style/article/Oakland-s-hip-and-vibrant-Temescal-Alley-takes-off-3463058.php. I had the pleasure of devouring one of Doughnut Dolly’s delish...

Dining Room Makeover – This isn’t Downton Abbey

While we can dream of having footmen, valets and ladies’ maids it just isn’t the way things are done in 2013.  I was late to the party when it came to watching Downton Abbey but I quickly became obsessed with it.  By borrowing a few elements from the PBS series we can adapt our modern day homes to become our version of Downton. Now fetch the housemaid and let’s get this place spiffed up and ready to entertain.   Cheers,...

WAIT FOR IT. . . Now that’s a concept

Our world is so rushed these days!  We want things in an instant.  We hate waiting.  Think about it, we wait in line at the grocery store, the movies, the gas station, etc.  We wait at the doctor’s office and the hairdressers.  We used to just wait quietly but now we have to be entertained.  We have our blackberries, our iphones, our Words With Friends.  Face it, we never like to wait! What does that mean for interior design?  It isn’t INSTANT, it is CUSTOM.  That means you pick out your furniture, draperies, and accents and you WAIT.  You can expect to wait 8-12 weeks for a...

Red Wine on My Sofa???

My last client had some particular needs when it came to choosing a textile for her sofa.  The fabric had to “wear like iron and be washable”.  That was no easy task to undertake as upholstery fabrics are not “washable”.  Choosing the color was easier.  She wanted a black or gray.   I went to work investigating textiles.  I quickly became a fan of Maxwell Fabrics and in particular their Nanotex line.  Samples in hand I scheduled an appointment with my client.  We took all the samples and spilled water on them!  Droplets of water rolled right off of them!  Hmmm, this was...

Las Vegas Summer Market

I recently attended Las Vegas Summer Market.  This is a mecca for interior designers.  Picture three high rise buildings filled to the brim with furniture, flooring, accessories, gifts and more.  It was a sensory overload to observe and I loved every minute of it. I saw two very distinct trends going on right now.  The first one I will call the Reclaimed Wood Craze.  The second one I have dubbed “Bright, bold and graphic”.  I saw very little that did not fit into these two categories.  The longevity of the Reclaimed Wood Craze has surprised me.  You can rest...
